House Kotze

Houghton, Johannesburg
2000

House Kotze was a modern house designed for a young couple. The layout is different. The site was divided into 2 levels with the bottom level being an original tennis court which was subdivided to make the new site.

Thus, the opportunity arose for a twist on how to access the house. Thanks to the difference in levels, the entrance to the house is through the first floor overlooking the double volume living areas below. A free standing concrete staircase makes for a sculptural descent into the main living area below. Two majestic white double volume fireplaces flank the living area and separates the functions of seating and dining. In turn, the whole area opens up onto the open terrace and the lap pool.

The bedrooms are situated on the first floor beyond the access staircase which marks the point where public becomes private. Aesthetically, the flat roof and the white colour presents a blank canvas to the future. It intends no to overwhelm or dictate while still creating spaces that work and that would change functions throughout the original couple’s as well a future inhabitants of the space.
