House Struwig is situated in the south of Windhoek overlooking the Auas mountain range.
The house plan is divided in to 3 “blocks” that scroll down the gentle slope of the site. The studio block, the garage/staff block, and the main house block which in turn is divided into 2 further sub “blocks”, the living public area and the bedroom private area. The main house “block “is placed along the east/west axis in order to allow for maximum light and ventilation. The roof is divided into 2 sections to allow for a “chimney “effect ventilation system when the top clerestory windows automatically open. Aesthetically, House Struwig is a laminated wooden frame structure which is slightly elevated off the natural ground with a concrete floor slab. This is in order to effectively separate the wood from the ground due to the local indigenous termite population. Steel brackets protect the bottom sections of the wooden members.
To the south, and acting as a foreground to the Auas mountain range, there will be a natural swimming pool shaped organically and a sparse open lawn area for the parents to enjoy play time with their children.
